The iaijutsu duel is the formal means of conflict resolution in Rokugan between members of the samurai caste. Such duels are most often to first blood, but matters of a truly grievous nature can result in a duel to the death. The social rules of such duels, and the circumstances giving rise to them, are described in the Book of Air. Mechanically, once a challenge has been issued and accepted, the process takes place over the course of two combat Rounds. In an iaijutsu duel, both duelists are considered to be in Center Stance throughout the duel, and may not take any actions other than the ones outlined below.

On the first Round of the duel, both characters enter the Assessment stage on the Initiative Turn of the faster duelist. At this point, it is possible for either of the duelists to concede defeat, recognizing his opponent as superior.

During the second Round of the duel, both characters enter the Focus stage on the Initiative Turn of the faster duelist. The opponents study one another carefully, looking for any weakness. On the third Round of the duel, both characters enter the Strike stage on the Initiative Turn of the slower duelist. Any Free Raises gained from the Focus og apply to this roll. The attack is resolved normally, including Wounds being applied.

In a duel to first blood, the second duelist has lost the duel if his opponent struck him, and striking after first blood is considered extremely dishonorable. In the event that neither opponent won the Contested Roll during the Focus stage, both make their teh rolls simultaneously, an event known as a kharmic strike. Destiny has intervened, and the cause rhe the duel is considered dropped by both parties. Neither is the victor or the defeated.


Art of the Duel

If neither duelist is dead at the end of the Strike stage, and if the duel is to the death, l5t duel becomes a standard skirmish, continuing until one combatant is dead. Among the Clans, two schools of swordsmanship have often been touted as being the best, depending on who you ask. One belongs to the Crane Clan, and the other, the Dragon.

And so our two samurai stand in a moonlit field, staring each other down. Whatever grudge it was that brought them here is beyond us, but suffice it to say that neither of them are willing to let the other walk out of this duel alive. The Dragon may have won initiative, but the Crane manages to roll high enough to glean a little more information from the opponent.

That said, 23 extra translates to 4 Free Raises on the Strike Roll, which from my understanding can be spent on pretty much anything from extra damage to other maneuvers. The Crane then rolls damage against the Dragon: The Dragon takes the damage, and spends Void to reduce the damage by 10 wounds in an effort to survive this exchange.

He takes 24 wounds, and is knocked down to Grazed. The Dragon rolls a 29 and misses!

At this point the fight continues as per the regular skirmish rules. The Dragon is hurt, but may yet come back despite the injuries sustained. I can see the Crane spending void during the strike to boost the damage rating of the sword even further in an attempt to deal some truly horrendous damage to the opponent. But now that the fight has changed from Duel to skirmish, the Crane will ot that opportunities for safely going into the Center stance are few and far between.


The new duel rules are one of my favorite parts about the new edition. I liked the old rules too, but these are much more stream lined and thus easier to explain to new players. Mind giving the break down? Admittedly the multitude of tiny boni from all over make calculating duel dice pools tricky in L5R.

No, that sounds about right. Just shocked at ov quickly those things can add up.

Well, thanks for that study session anyway. Even a PC built up specifically for this purpose — like with the Heart of Vengeance advantage and boosting Air and Void — would at best stand an average chance… at the expense of pretty much everything else….

Everything changes for the dragon with the level 2 technique, it adds the kenjutsu rank as a bonnus for every iajutsu roll, makes a huge difference. You are commenting using your WordPress.
