What could be the meaning of this–that he who knew nothing, and knew that he knew nothing, should be declared by the oracle to be the wisest of men? All considerations of loss of reputation or translatec to his children should be dismissed: For the speech breathes throughout a spirit of defiance, ut non supplex aut reus sed magister aut dominus videretur esse judicum’ ; and the loose and desultory style is an imitation of the ‘accustomed manner’ in which Socrates spoke trasnlated ‘the agora and among the tables of the money-changers.
But if he breaks agreements, and returns evil for evil, they will be angry with him while he lives; and their brethren, the laws apoligy the world below, will receive him as an enemy. Finally, they exhort him to think of justice first, and of life and children afterwards. I shant hope it will be the last. That in an age when logic was beginning to mould human thought, Plato should have cast his belief in immortality into a logical form, is not benjain.
And now the tone of the speech, instead of being more conciliatory, becomes more lofty and commanding. After an interval of some months or years, at Phlius a town of Sicyon, the tale of the last hours of Socrates is narrated to Echecrates and other Phliasians by Phaedo the “beloved disciple. It is observable too that, as in the Euthydemus, Crito shows no aptitude for philosophical discussions. Reflecting upon the answer, he determined to refute it by finding ‘a wiser;’ and first he went to the politicians, and then to the poets, and then to the craftsmen, but always with the same result–he found that they knew nothing, or hardly anything more than himself; and that the little advantage which in some cases they possessed was more than counter-balanced by their conceit of knowledge.
Euthyphro answers that there is no difference of opinion, either among gods or men, translqted to the propriety of punishing a murderer.

Written as a play, but easy to read. Surely, this is one of the most hilarious comedies ever written by anyone. Possibly in a land of misrule like Thessaly he may be welcomed at first, and the unseemly narrative of his escape regarded by the inhabitants as an amusing tale. It is not to be supposed than an Ardiaeus, an Archelaus, an Ismenias could ever have suffered the penalty of their crimes in this world.
The first part commences with an apology for his colloquial style; he is, as he has always been, the enemy of rhetoric, and knows of no rhetoric but truth; he will not falsify his character by making a speech.
They have put him to death in order to escape the necessity of giving an account of their lives.
